Walking/Birdwatching

Described as a haven for walkers and bird and wildlife enthusiasts alike, peace and tranquility is really just around the corner. Origo Mare lies some three miles from the start of 'The Volcano Walk' which begins in Lajares and finishes in Corralejo. Described in some of the guide books as the best walk on the Island, it follows a natural ridge with diversions up to look into the crater of an extinct volcano.

This is a walk we discovered this year. It is well marked and once at the top, affords spectacular views over the whole of the north of the island. Accessed from La Matilla, a small village just outside La Oliva. Fill your water bottles at the spring, before you start and don't forget sunscreen, even if it's cloudy!

The route up the  mountain with points of interest.

Well marked start of the climb.

Slowly warming up!!!

Rest area by a natural spring.

Seen from the top of Montana La Muda, Tindaya, considered by the pre Spanish population as the  home of the sacred mountain.  Take the ashfelt road north, pick up a track right and follow it until you reach the baranco heading north. This brings you out at Esquinzo, one of the prettiest beaches in the area. The chances are that you will be the only ones there if you visit it during the week!!

For those interested in Birdwatching, Fuerteventura has a lot to offer as it's natural open spaces make it quite easy to observe species that are difficult to spot in other surroundings, including the other islands of the archipelago. These are a few of the birds that visited our garden or were seen in the immediate vacinity of Villa Bocaina.

This little fella might be a Fuertaventurian chat, and often shared our breakfast rolls.

You are very likely to see and hear Hoopoe's around the villa.

Can anyone help me identify this one?

And this one?
